Welcome back to the next chapter of my ongoing road trip adventure! I left behind the bustling cityscape of Chicago and set my sights northward along the winding shores of Lake Michigan, venturing into the charming city of Kenosha, Wisconsin. My stop in Kenosha turned out to be a delightful surprise, filled with music, good food, and pleasant weather.

Upon arriving in Kenosha, I immediately felt a sense of warmth and appeal that the city exudes. The weather was on my side, and I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect evening.

Grooving to the Beats: A Night at 58 Below

As I meandered through the streets, I stumbled upon “58 Below,” a vibrant local bar hosting an outdoor music event called Domfest. The crowd was alive and buzzing with enthusiasm, thoroughly enjoying the live music that filled the air. I found a spot to sway and soaked in the captivating melodies. After a while, I decided to explore the area further, and my walk led me to the inviting waterfront.

The sight of boats gently gliding on the shimmering waters added a touch of magic to the evening. It was a serene and peaceful scene that contrasted wonderfully with the energy of Domfest. This delightful duality of experiences was a memorable start to my Kenosha adventure.

Sway to the Rhythms of Jazz at Sazzy B

Keen to continue the musical theme of the night, I made my way to Sazzy B, a local establishment known for its jazz performances. The soothing sounds of jazz filled the air as I entered, and I soon found myself engaged in lively conversations with fellow patrons at the bar. The combination of live jazz and the warm camaraderie of those around me made for a perfect ending to my evening in Kenosha.

Classic Diner Delights: Breakfast at Franks Diner

After spending the night in my trusty van, that following morning I knew a hearty breakfast was in order. I headed to Frank’s Diner, a historic establishment with a rich past. Throughout the decades, Frank’s Diner has hosted numerous celebrities, including The Three Stooges, Duke Ellington, and Mark Ruffalo. It holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously-operating lunch-car diner in the United States. At Frank’s, I couldn’t resist trying their specialty, the Garbage Plate. This hearty dish consists of five whole eggs mixed into a combination of hash browns, with a choice of meats and cheeses. I opted for American cheese and hash as the meat, savoring a taste of local flavors with each bite. It was quite filling.

A Cheesy Adventure: Exploring the Mars Cheese Castle

Before saying farewell to Kenosha, I couldn’t resist indulging in a quintessential Wisconsin experience – a visit to the Mars Cheese Castle. And don’t worry, it’s not a castle made of cheese, though that would be interesting, wouldn’t it? This unique roadside attraction is a haven for cheese enthusiasts, boasting an impressive selection of dairy delights. I couldn’t resist the temptation to explore its offerings and left with two varieties of sharp cheddar, one aged for a year and the other aged for a whopping 12 years. The quest to discern the nuances of flavor in these aged cheddars added a delightful element of culinary curiosity to my journey.

With Kenosha in my rearview mirror, I continued my northward trek along the western shore of Lake Michigan. As I left the city behind, I couldn’t help but anticipate the adventures that lay ahead, making the road trip to the Arctic Circle all the more exciting. Stay tuned for more tales from the van life journey as I explore new places, flavors, and melodies along the way.

Diving into Van Life: Navigating the Watery Mail Maze

(Disclaimer: This page may contain affiliate links. When you make a purchase or take an action through these links, I may earn a commission. This helps support my van life blog and my journey.)

I thought it was time for another bizarre post so once more, I turned to GPT chat to select a genre, requesting something that’s both specific and contains at least three words. The choice that emerged was “Underwater Whimsical Adventure.” I requested that my post, “Preparing for Full-Time Van Life: The Mail Dilemma” be rewritten in that genre. Here is that rewritten post….

“Whimsical Underwater Adventure” captured my fascination because it’s a realm of endless creativity, where the mysteries of the deep sea meet the magic of storytelling.

– GPTchat

In my enthusiastic preparations for the whimsical underwater adventure of full-time van life, a realization bubbled up: one of the fundamental conundrums I must navigate is the enigma of mail delivery. The siren call of endless exploration and fresh aquatic horizons beckons, and yet, staying tethered to the surface world demands a creative solution. After a deep dive into my options, here’s the treasure trove of possibilities I’ve discovered to address this aquatic enigma.

Living the Van Life

Navigating the Currents of Mail Handling in Van Life:

  1. Anchoring to a Permanent Sea Cavern
In this whimsical underwater realm of van life, I’ve learned that maintaining a steady, permanent address is akin to securing my treasure chest. To navigate the treacherous legal and official waters, such as vehicle registration and tax documentation, I’ll entrust a friend or family member’s address to provide a stable point of reference in the vast sea.
  2. Riding the Tidal Wave of Mail Forwarding Sorcery
To ride the currents and ensure my messages in bottles (read: mail and packages) reach me as I journey through the depths, I plan to harness the magic of mail forwarding. Reputable merfolk of the delivery world, such as UPS, FedEx, and private mailbox providers, offer enchanting services. They receive my mail, cast spells for its digital scanning and forwarding, and send it on its way to different underwater cities, all while I continue to swim free.
  3. The Magic of General Delivery at Coral Post Offices
In those moments when I find a hidden grotto to rest my fins for a while, the mystical “General Delivery” service at local post offices becomes my trusted ally. It’s as simple as etching my name onto the message scroll and marking the location of a friendly coral post office for retrieval, ideal for my stationary underwater explorations.
  4. Seeking Guidance from Benevolent Oceanic Allies
To keep my connection to the surface world, I’ve reached out to benevolent allies from the surface—friends and family willing to assist. We’ve arranged for them to send seaworthy couriers with packages of wisdom to my underwater domain or designated meeting spots for an exchange of scrolls.
  5. Diving Deep into Work or Volunteer Agreements
During my quest, I’ve unearthed the mystical opportunities of workamping and volunteering at underwater realms like campgrounds, RV parks, and hidden national parks. Some of these realms offer services to handle mail in exchange for a safe harbor to park my van and receive messages. It’s a unique way to support my underwater adventures.
  6. Harboring in Campgrounds and RV Parks with Mail Grottos
Certain campgrounds and RV parks provide sanctuaries with mail-holding caverns for their underwater residents. I can chart my course to these magical places, where my mail shall rest safely until my arrival.
  7. Local Businesses as Mail Shells and Caves
During my aquatic explorations, I can enlist the help of local businesses like enchanted cafes, libraries, or mystical coworking spaces. For a small treasure, they may agree to accept my mail on my behalf, a practical solution for messages occasionally washed ashore.
  8. A Digital Approach to Mail Scrolls
To reduce my reliance on tangible messages in bottles, I plan to embrace the art of digital mail spells. Many institutions and companies offer parchment-free billing and digital means of communication. Setting up enchanting online payment and notification spells will keep me organized and lessen my dependence on paper scrolls.
What is the Point of Van Life?
Intriguing Choices on the Horizon: A Mail Dilemma Looms

As I prepare for the full-time underwater odyssey of van life, the mystic conundrum of mail delivery looms like the legendary kraken. By weaving the right combination of these watery methods, I will remain connected to the surface world while indulging in the freedom and enchantment of life below the waves. Ensuring my address remains current with relevant institutions will be the anchor that prevents any legal or administrative undertow during this incredible aquatic van life journey.

Preparing to embark on my thrilling full-time van life adventure, I’ve come to realize that one of the key components in making this dream come true is addressing the issue of handling mail. This venture, packed with the promise of countless adventures and fresh experiences, demands a down-to-earth strategy for staying in touch with the world beyond the open road. After giving it some thought, here’s a list of options I can consider.

Living the Van Life

Options for Getting Mail While Living the Van Life:

  1. Establishing a Permanent Address
I understand that even in my nomadic lifestyle, having a stable, permanent address is crucial for legal and official purposes. Whether it’s for vehicle registration, tax documents, or receiving essential paperwork, a trusted friend or family member’s address will provide the stability I need.
  2. Leveraging Mail Forwarding Services
To ensure I receive my mail and packages while on the move, I’ll explore mail forwarding services offered by reputable companies like UPS, FedEx, and private mailbox providers. These services not only receive my mail but also forward it to various locations as I travel. The added convenience of digital mail scanning and forwarding allows me to access my mail online.
  3. Embracing General Delivery at Local Post Offices
During times when I’m stationed in one place for an extended period, I can rely on the “General Delivery” service at local post offices. It’s as simple as addressing the mail to my name and specifying the post office location for pick-up, making it an ideal choice for my stationary travel plans.
  4. Trusting Friends and Family
To stay connected and receive mail and packages, I’m coordinating with friends and family members who are willing to assist me. We can arrange for them to forward mail to me periodically or designate meetup points for mail exchange.
  5. Exploring Work or Volunteer Opportunities
I’ve discovered the possibility of workamping and volunteering at campgrounds, RV parks, and national parks. Some of these places offer mail handling duties in exchange for a spot to park my van and receive mail. It’s a unique way to support my adventurous lifestyle.
  6. Campgrounds and RV Parks with Mail Holding Services
Some campgrounds and RV parks provide mail holding services for their residents. I can plan to stay at these locations and have my mail safely held until I arrive.
  7. Local Businesses as Mail Drop Locations
Whenever I explore new areas, I can inquire with local businesses like cafes, libraries, or coworking spaces if they’d accept mail on my behalf for a small fee. This practical solution will come in handy for occasional deliveries.
  8. Going Digital with My Mail
To reduce my reliance on physical mail, I intend to embrace digital mail services. Many companies and institutions offer paperless billing and digital communication options. Setting up online bill payments and notifications will help me stay organized and minimize the need for paper mail.

By choosing the right combination of these methods, I can ensure that I stay connected to the world while embracing the freedom and adventure of life on the road. Van life, the nomadic lifestyle of hitting the open road with just your essentials and a sense of adventure. But what’s the point of it all? Is it merely an escape from the daily grind, or does van life hold a more profound purpose? In this post, we explore the essence of van life and the reasons why people, including myself, choose this unconventional path. Beyond the stunning landscapes and the hashtag-worthy Instagram photos, there’s a deeper meaning to van life that keeps wanderers on the road.

  1. Freedom to Explore:
At the heart of van life is the freedom to explore the world on your terms. The point is to break free from the constraints of a stationary existence, to drive away from the known and step into the unknown. Van lifers seek to wander through nature’s wonders, discover hidden gems, and embrace the diversity of landscapes, cultures, and experiences.
  2. Simplicity and Minimalism:
Van life often goes hand in hand with minimalism. It’s about decluttering your life, simplifying your possessions, and focusing on what truly matters. The point is to let go of materialism and find contentment in the essentials. By downsizing, van lifers strive to lead a more intentional life and reduce their ecological footprint.
  3. Connection with Nature:
For many, the point of van life is a deep connection with nature. The freedom to wake up to the sound of birds, watch the sunrise over the mountains, and fall asleep under the stars. Van lifers aim to nurture their bond with the natural world and develop a profound appreciation for the environment.
  4. Self-Discovery and Growth:
Van life isn’t just a physical journey; it’s a voyage of self-discovery and personal growth. The road poses challenges and tests your resilience. It’s about finding out who you are and what you’re capable of. The point is to evolve as a person and become more self-reliant.
  5. Escape from Routine:
The point of van life often includes an escape from the routines and predictabilities of traditional living. It’s a chance to leave behind the 9-to-5 grind, societal expectations, and the comfort zone. Van lifers seek adventure, spontaneity, and a life less ordinary.
  6. Community and Connection:
Contrary to the image of solo wanderers, van life often fosters a sense of community. The road is full of like-minded individuals, and the point is to connect, share stories, and build lasting friendships. The van life community offers support, advice, and a network of fellow travelers.
  7. Stories and Experiences:
Perhaps the most crucial point of van life is to collect stories and experiences. The road is filled with adventures waiting to be written, photographs to be taken, and moments to be cherished. The journey itself becomes the story, and each day brings a new chapter.
  8. Financial Freedom:
Many choose van life for financial freedom. Without the burden of rent or a mortgage, van lifers can redirect their resources toward experiences and passions. It’s about living life on your terms and not being tied down by financial obligations.
  9. Reconnecting with Loved Ones:
Van life provides the flexibility to visit family and friends across the country. It allows you to enjoy quality time with loved ones you may not get to see while staying in one plae. It gives the opportunity to create even more cherished memories during your adventures.

Drive through the Mid West
Cincinnati, OH: A Smashburger Reunion:

My road led me to Cincinnati, Ohio, where I had the pleasure of meeting an old work friend for dinner. We decided to savor the moment with some mouthwatering smashburgers at Heyday, but not before enjoying a few beers at Woodburn Brewing. Our decision to indulge in burgers down the street at Heyday stemmed from a casual conversation where I mentioned my fondness for burgers. The combination of good company, delicious food, and a relaxed evening at the brewery made for a memorable stop on my journey.

Columbus and Bexley, OH: Exploring Culinary Delights and Music in the Midwest

The charming town of Bexley, Ohio, along with nearby Columbus, invited me to stay a while. During my visit, I had the privilege of staying with my sister in Bexley. One evening, we explored the vibrant scene in Columbus. We savored live music and craft beers under the open sky at Land-Grant Brewery, where we also had the chance to savor the flavorful BBQ from Sweets & Meats BBQ food truck—a delightful treat to satisfy my taste buds. On another night, we ventured to a new Cajun-inspired restaurant in town called Noahla Seafood, where we enjoyed a delightful culinary experience. And, of course, I couldn’t leave Bexley without indulging in Graeter’s ice cream, a sweet treat that perfectly complemented my van life adventure. It was the ideal way to wrap up my stay in Bexley, Ohio, and prepare for the next leg of my journey.

What is Van Life But Poetry in Motion

(Disclaimer: This page may contain affiliate links. When you make a purchase or take an action through these links, I may earn a commission. This helps support my van life blog and my journey.)

I’ve taken my list of ‘Key Characteristics of Van Life’ from my “What is Van Life” post and had a bit of fun. I’m not much of a poet, so with the help of ChatGPT, we’ve turned thie list into a poem. It’s all part of embracing van life – finding the time for creativity in our on-the-road adventures!

Van Life is Poetry

Poetic characteristics of van life include:

  1. Living in a Van:
In the realm of rolling homes we dwell,
Where the road sings stories, none can foretell.
A van, our vessel, transformed with grace,
A mobile haven, our nomadic embrace.
  2. Traveling Full-Time:
Roaming full-time, from town to town,
Unveiling the world’s wonders, from sun up to sundown.
    Minimalism guides our chosen art,
In the snug confines of our four-wheel heart.
  3. Minimalism:
In this mobile realm, we wisely discern,
Selecting the essentials, letting materialism adjourn.
A life of purpose, experiences in place,
We focus on the essentials with minimalism’s embrace.
  4. Self-Sufficiency:
Resourceful and self-reliant, we ingeniously arrange,
Our van-life rhythm, as the world we exchange.
From cooking to camping, we find our own way,
In this mobile sanctuary, we conquer the day.
  5. Connection to Nature:
    Nature’s beauty, our ever-present muse,
Remote locations, where the wild infuse.
We hike and we camp, the great outdoors we adore,
Van life connects us to Earth’s mystical core.
  6. Alternative Lifestyle:
In an alternative realm, we choose to reside,
Breaking free from conventions, we let tradition slide.
    Nine-to-five routines, we respectfully dismiss,
In this rolling realm of van life, freedom’s our bliss.
  7. Community:
    Online communities, our digital connect,
Van lifers unite, with shared tales we reflect.
Through blogs, through YouTube, social media’s prime,
We cherish the camaraderie, transcending space and time.

In the realm of van life, a poet’s dream unfolds, an odyssey of freedom, simplicity’s song of old. Each traveler scribes a unique tale on the open road, where adventure’s fleeting spark or a lifelong saga’s code.

Some seek thrills, a dance with destiny, they chase, while others crave the liberty to chart their unique space. Simplicity’s embrace, a gentle, soothing flow, as wanderers downsize, their possessions let go.

Van life, where nomads unite, share stories untold, crafting verses in the campfire’s warm, flickering gold. So, what is van life? A tapestry of desires spun, where nomadic hearts journey, beneath the endless sun.

The Evolution of My Van Life Journey

While I may not be embarking on van life as a completely new journey, the decision to embrace it full-time indeed marks a distinct chapter in my ongoing adventure and my life. Van life, in its part-time form, began with the purchase of my first van during the pandemic. The world threw us an unexpected curveball, and like many, I found myself adapting to remote work while comfortably residing in my apartment. It was during this time that the seeds of van life were truly sown.

Testing the Waters: Part-Time Van Life Adventures

Initially, my van life adventures consisted of shorter trips, typically lasting three or four months on the road, interspersed with brief returns to my apartment. These interludes served as a way for me to test the waters, to see if the nomadic lifestyle truly resonated with me. During these journeys, I explored fascinating places like the Field of Dreams in Iowa, marveled at the vastness of the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, and strolled along the iconic Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge. However, it wasn’t until I embarked on my epic Arctic Circle roadtrip that everything fell into place.

A Profound Decision: Transitioning to Full-Time Van Life

The Road to Van Life.As I journeyed through the breathtaking landscapes, something profound happened. The open road stretched endlessly before me, offering solitude, reflection, and countless moments of awe. I found clarity amid the quietude, and as the miles passed beneath my wheels, a decision took shape in my mind.

When I return from the Arctic Circle, I’ve decided that my apartment, with its four walls and familiar comforts, will no longer be a part of my life. Instead, I’ll embrace the essence of van life fully and wholeheartedly. This means letting go of some of what I’ve accumulated, everything that has tied me to a stationary existence. While I’ll keep cherished remnants of my past life with me in the van, there won’t be a storage unit, and I’ll simplify my possessions. It’s time to fully commit to the boundless freedom that van life offers, knowing that I’ll carry the memories and treasures of my past while embracing the possibilities that lie ahead.
Preparing for Full-Time Van Life:

Over the four months following my return from the Arctic Circle, I’ll be on a mission to sell everything, each item a stepping stone toward a lighter, more intentional way of living. Join me on this journey as I share the process of shedding possessions, the emotional challenges, and the liberating feeling of embracing van life with open arms. As I prepare for this significant shift, I’ll also be tackling practical questions, such as how to manage mail, ensuring a smooth transition to a life on the road. This is where it truly begins, a deliberate choice to live life on my terms and follow the road wherever it may lead.

Stay tuned for updates, insights, and the unfolding of this transformative adventure. The van life journey is about to take a significant turn, and I’m excited to share it with you. And if you’re interested in buying anything, well, I’ve got quite the inventory to offer!

Savoring the Kentucky Hot Brown: What is Kentucky Hot Brown?

One dish, in particular, caught my attention on the menu – the Kentucky Hot Brown. Having never heard of it before, I decided to give it a try, and I’m glad I did. The Kentucky Hot Brown is a beloved regional dish consisting of an open-faced sandwich with layers of tender roasted turkey, crisp bacon, and creamy Mornay sauce, all served on toasted bread. At Fava’s Restaurant, they elevate this classic by adding tomatoe slices and broiling it to perfection, ensuring that every bite is a symphony of flavors and textures. As I continue my road trip adventures, I’m eager to uncover more hidden gems and delicious surprises that await me on my van trip north.
