The order is based on the first five burger places that came to mind while sitting down to write this post. Key West, FL – the start of the journey North

As I was thinking about my year-long roadtrip and wandering around Key West, Florida, I couldn’t help but marvel at the fact that I was exactly at the halfway point of my epic adventure. Six months down, and another six months of thrilling escapades awaited me. It was like the intermission of a spectacular show, and I had the best seats in the house, the driver’s seat! With this unique juncture in mind, I found myself grappling with a rather delightful dilemma: the choice of the route that would guide me from this sun-soaked tropical paradise to the Arctic Circle’s icy embrace. There are so many options and routes to choose from!

What made it even more intriguing was that, thanks to the grapevine, my family had caught wind of my Arctic-bound escapades and decided to jump aboard the adventure train. They were so excited about my polar pilgrimage that they wanted to join me and planned to meet me in Anchorage, Alaska. From there we would head to the Arctic Circle together.

Time was of the essence as I grappled with the task of charting a road trip course that would take me on a memorable journey from Key West to the Arctic’s frosty wonderland, all while ensuring I arrived in time to pick them up at the airport.

The simplest route on this epic roadtrip adventure led straight to Dawson Creek, British Columbia, the starting point of the legendary Alaska Highway. This direct path offered the prospect of a relatively swift journey, slicing through the heart of North America. The temptation to rush there in a hurry was hard to resist, but as it turned out, I had more time available than I expected. This surplus of time meant I could savor the journey, allowing for memorable experiences and moments instead of a mere race to the destination.

With six months behind me and six months ahead, I began exploring alternative routes that would take me from the balmy Southeast all the way to the Arctic North. Why settle for the ordinary when I could zigzag my way through the Southwest, then make a beeline for the North via various scenic detours? Or perhaps, I could cut right through the heart of the U.S. before beginning my journey North.

After an assortment of route-doodling and contemplation, I settled on a plan that blended the direct route with a touch of personal flair. I decided to incorporate Charlotte, North Carolina, into the itinerary for a long-overdue visit with my brother. And why stop there? Carmel, Indiana, beckoned for a cousinly catch-up.

For an extra dash of adventure, I hatched a plan to cross the border near Thunder Bay, Ontario – not only because it sounded delightfully thunderous but also because it offered the opportunity to glide along the shimmering Great Lakes, including the majestic north shore of Lake Superior. Along the way, I’d venture through places I’d only heard of in passing: Oshkosh, Wisconsin; the legendary Green Bay; and the charming city of Duluth, Minnesota. This would also take me across Canada on the Trans-Canada Highway.

What Route Should I Take to drive to the Arctic Circle?

Here is a list with some of the options I considered when deciding how I’d drive to the Arctic:

1. Direct Route via Alaska Highway:
   • Description: This is the most straightforward route, starting from Key West, Florida, and following the Alaska Highway. It’s the quickest way but involves a long drive through diverse landscapes.
2. Southern Zigzag Route:
   • Description: This route takes you through the southern states, such as Texas, Arizona, and California, before heading up the West Coast and into Alaska. It allows for exploring the southwestern U.S. along the way.
3. Eastern U.S. Route:
   • Description: Travel up the eastern side of the U.S., passing through cities like Charlotte, North Carolina, and making stops in cities like Nashville, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri. You can then head west toward Alaska.
4. Central U.S. Route:
   • Description: This route takes you through the heartland of America, passing through states like Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota before reaching Canada and eventually Alaska. It offers a mix of rural and urban experiences.
5. Great Lakes and Northern Route:
   • Description: Cross into Canada near the Great Lakes region, driving along the northern shore of Lake Superior. This route offers scenic views and opportunities to explore cities like Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Duluth, Minnesota, before entering Alaska.
6. Coastal Route:
   • Description: Drive along the eastern coast of the U.S. before crossing into Canada and following the Canadian coast, passing through maritime provinces. Eventually, you’ll make your way to Alaska along the coastline.
7. Canadian Prairie Route:
   • Description: Travel through the Canadian prairies, passing through cities like Winnipeg and Saskatoon, before entering the Canadian Rockies and eventually reaching Alaska.
8. Mountain Adventure Route:
   • Description: Head west through the Rocky Mountains, experiencing stunning mountain vistas. This route takes you through states like Colorado and Montana before reaching Canada and Alaska.
9. Pacific Northwest and West Coast Route:
   • Description: Start from Key West and head west, crossing the country to reach the Pacific Northwest. Then, follow the coastline northward, passing through Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia, before entering Alaska.
10. Eastern Canada Route:
    • Description: Travel east through Canada, exploring provinces like Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, before entering Newfoundland and Labrador and then making your way to Alaska.

As I looked ahead to the road, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the second half of this incredible journey held the potential for even more remarkable moments than the first. With each mile taking me closer to the Arctic’s wonderland, I eagerly anticipated the adventures, stories, and memories that were waiting to unfold, and I couldn’t wait to share them with all those who joined me on this unforgettable roadtrip.

Each house sit promises a unique sense of comfort, complete with all the amenities needed for a cozy stay. Whether I want to unwind with a book by the fireplace or cook up my favorite meals in a well-equipped kitchen, the comforts of home are inviting.

While I haven’t yet established connections with homeowners, the potential for building a global network of like-minded individuals is exciting. These connections could enhance my travel experiences, providing insights into new destinations, local recommendations, and opportunities for lasting friendships.

“Van life” refers to a lifestyle in which individuals or couples choose to live and travel in converted vans or camper vans, often for an extended period of time. It has gained popularity as a way to embrace a simpler, more mobile, and adventurous way of living. The term “van life” originally referred to living in a van, but it has evolved to encompass various types of recreational vehicles (RVs) and camper vans. Many people now embrace the RV lifestyle, which includes motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, and other types of mobile homes. RV life shares many similarities with van life, including travel, minimalism, and a love for adventure.

Key characteristics of van life include:

1. Living in a Van: Well this is a pretty obvious one! Van lifers typically convert their vans into mobile homes, creating a functional living space that includes sleeping, cooking, and storage areas. The level of customization can vary widely, from basic setups to more luxurious and fully equipped interiors.
2. Traveling Full-Time: Many people who embrace van life travel full-time, often traveling to and exploring various regions, cities, and natural landscapes. The mobility of a van allows them to change their location frequently, experiencing new environments and cultures along the way.
3. Minimalism: Van life often encourages a minimalist lifestyle, as space in a van is limited. Van lifers must carefully choose and prioritize their possessions, focusing on essentials and experiences rather than material possessions.
4. Self-Sufficiency: Van lifers learn to be self-sufficient, as they manage their daily needs in a confined space. This includes cooking meals, maintaining the van, finding places to park or camp, and managing resources like water and electricity.
5. Connection to Nature: Living in a van often fosters a closer connection to nature. Many van lifers seek out remote or natural locations for camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities, allowing them to immerse themselves in the natural world.
6. Alternative Lifestyle: Van life is seen as an alternative lifestyle choice that challenges the conventional norms of home ownership and the 9-to-5 work routine. It offers freedom, flexibility, and a break from the traditional rat race.
7. Online Community: The van life community is active online, with many van lifers sharing their experiences, tips, and adventures through blogs, social media, and YouTube channels. This has contributed to the lifestyle’s popularity and provided a sense of community for those on the road.

So… what is van life? It’s important to note that van life can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals choose van life as a temporary adventure, while others adopt it as a long-term way of life. The reasons for embracing van life can also differ, including a desire for adventure, a need for financial freedom, or a wish to simplify and downsize.

I embarked on an ambitious year-long road trip that kicked off in Boston in November 2022, and it’s set to conclude right back where it began in November 2023. The prospect of this grand journey filled me with a unique blend of anticipation and excitement, knowing that I would be traversing the diverse landscapes of North America, experiencing the ebb and flow of the seasons from coast to coast.

For the initial leg of the adventure, I strategically planned to chase the sun, leading me through the warmth of the southern states and up the breathtakingly scenic west coast. This part of the trip allowed me to soak in the balmy rays of the southern winter, exploring charming coastal towns, vibrant cities, and natural wonders along the way. As the seasons shifted and the days grew longer, my route veered northward, transitioning into the summer phase. It was during this time that I embarked on a truly epic journey, navigating through the heart of Canada, crossing into the rugged wilderness of Alaska, and ultimately aiming for the elusive Arctic Circle. The stark contrast between the winter and summer segments of my voyage promised a wealth of diverse experiences, each chapter offering its own unique tapestry of sights, sounds, and adventures.

After completing my previous road trips, which had me on and off the road for about 3 to 4 months at a time over the past two years, I found myself contemplating my next adventure. Alaska, a place I had never explored, beckoned to me as an exciting destination. During my research, I stumbled upon a fascinating possibility: the opportunity to embark on a road journey to the Arctic Circle. The moment this idea took shape, I knew deep inside that this was the adventure I had been searching for. It was a decision made with unwavering excitement: ‘THAT’s what I want to do!’

A part of this journey will take me from one corner of the country to the other. The plan is to drive from Key West, FL to the Arctic Circle in Alaska.

This incredible app has become an indispensable tool in my van life adventures. In this post, I’ll share how I use iOverlander to find unique places to stay, locate water sources, and manage essential services for my van, making it a must-have resource for fellow travelers.

One of the most exciting aspects of van life is uncovering off-the-beaten-path destinations. With iOverlander, I can explore uncharted territories with ease. The app is a treasure trove of user-generated content, offering details about scenic camping spots, serene lakesides, and breathtaking vistas that conventional travel guides often miss.

How I Use IOverlander:

1. Finding Campsites:
   I use iOverlander to discover unique camping spots. The app provides valuable insights into free campsites, wild camping areas, and paid campgrounds. Each listing includes reviews and ratings from fellow travelers, helping me choose the perfect spot to park for the night.
2. Water Sources:
   Staying hydrated is crucial during van life, and iOverlander makes it simple to locate water sources. I rely on the app to pinpoint nearby taps, public fountains, or places where I can fill my water tanks, ensuring a steady supply of clean water for cooking and washing.
3. Dump Stations:
   Proper waste disposal is a part of responsible van life. iOverlander’s extensive database includes information on dump stations where I can safely empty my gray water tank and dispose of waste, all without impacting the environment.
4. Connectivity:
   Van life doesn’t mean you have to disconnect entirely. I use iOverlander to find spots with good cell signal or free Wi-Fi, allowing me to stay connected with friends, family, and my online community.

One of the things I love about my travels is that I get to experience living elsewhere.  Staying at an AirBnB or with friends gives me the ability to experience life as if I were living in places other than Boston.  I get to shop at the local grocery stores, experience the coffee shop around the corner, see what night life is like and work remotely in different environments.  It’s like I’m living somewhere else for a small amount of time. These are my ‘other homes’ from my Missoula and back trip.

Des Moines, IA

My Des Moines AirBnB home was in a great location, in a beautiful neighborhood and had some old charm.  The coffee shop was just a few blocks away and downtown was a short drive.  I was able to take a short Uber to the Iowa State Fair and most activities and restaurants were a quick drive. Raven, the cat, loved sitting on my lap and visiting me in my room which was very sweet. The front porch was quaint and a great place to relax or get some work done.

Omaha, NE

My Omaha AirBnB was a comfortable little place in a very cute walkable residential neighborhood which I took advantage of. There were some really nice gardens up and down the street. Both the living room and front porch were very comfortable so I ended many of my evening just sitting in the front and reflecting.

Boise, ID

I think the Boise AirBnB was my favorite ‘home’ on this trip.  I had my own full apartment above the garage which made it look like it was up in the trees. It was in such a beautiful, walking, tree lined neighborhood which made it very peaceful. It was named “Pat’s Treehouse” after one of the owners, however, I called it that because I was able to watch the Pats on the big screen television!

Fargo, ND

My Fargo AirBnB kept the trend of being in a nice residential neighborhood. I was able to walk to a few restaurants as well as the Fargo Brewing Company. It had a beautiful outdoor sitting area which I took advantage of by eating some of my meals there. The weather was so nice, I was able to work outside sometimes as well. I was a little surprised that Fargo in October was that warm.

As I waited, another van pulled up, and we both found ourselves in a parking standoff, each with our blinkers on, waiting for the same spot.

As my fellow van dweller and I both had our blinkers on, a tense situation emerged. We both desperately wanted the same spot from the first person to come down from the vortex. It was a classic case of blinker warfare—a standoff that can test the patience and civility of even the most seasoned van life travelers.

Tips for Navigating the Parking Challenge

1. Arrive Ultra Early: My ultimate recommendation, based on my experience living the van life, is to arrive at the Airport Mesa Vortex well before sunrise. This not only increases your chances of securing a parking spot for your van but also allows you to witness the stunning Sedona sunrise from this unique location.
2. Consider the Longer Parking Option: If you’re not an early bird or prefer a more extended hike while embracing the van life, the parking area at the top of Airport Rd is a viable alternative. While I can’t speak from personal experience about this option, it alleviates the stress of competing for limited spaces and provides an opportunity to explore a longer section of the trail. Many van life enthusiasts opt for this choice to avoid parking conflicts.
3. Be Prepared for Parking Fees: It’s possible that there may be a parking fee at the Airport Mesa Vortex. During my visit, I didn’t encounter such a charge, but I did notice that some websites mentioned the possibility.
